How Much Does Landscape Design Cost?

Landscape design fees are usually expressed either as a percentage of the anticipated construction budget or as a fixed fee against a defined scope. For substantial private gardens, a full design service — survey analysis, concept, developed design, technical drawings and construction support — commonly sits between eight and twelve per cent of the build cost.

That figure buys more than drawings. It buys the resolution of levels, drainage, structural retaining, material specification and planting schedules to a standard a contractor can price accurately and build without improvising. Gardens that overrun on cost almost always do so because those decisions were left to site.

As a rough guide to construction: a considered contemporary garden for a family house typically starts around £75,000. Add a pool, a pavilion or significant level change and £150,000 to £350,000 is normal. Country estate landscapes with parkland planting, drives and outbuildings run well beyond £500,000.

The most useful thing you can do early is separate the two conversations. Agree the design first, cost it properly, then phase the build if the total is more than you want to spend in one season. Phasing a well-resolved plan works. Building half of an unresolved one does not.
