London gardens are read from inside the house far more often than they are walked through. That changes the design entirely: the composition has to work as a picture from the kitchen table before it works underfoot.
Access is the practical constraint. Materials frequently arrive through the house or by crane, which affects unit sizes, tree specification and programme. We design with that in mind rather than specifying something that cannot physically reach the site.
Shade, party walls and overlooking dominate the planting strategy. Layered woodland-edge species, multi-stem trees for canopy without bulk, and carefully aimed lighting do more for a small London garden than any amount of hard landscape.
