A period house set against open parkland, where the landscape needed to mediate between formal architecture and borrowed countryside.
The Brief
To give a substantial Berkshire house a garden of equal presence: entertaining space close to the building, a softer middle ground, and a clean transition into the parkland beyond.
The Design
A long stone terrace runs the full width of the elevation, stepping down into a series of planted rooms that dissolve progressively into meadow. Sightlines are held on the two mature oaks.
Materials
Reclaimed Yorkstone relaid to match the house, oak pergola structures, and hand-set gravel paths with steel edging.
Planting
Nepeta, Salvia, Achillea and Stipa in long drifts, with white Rosa and Hydrangea near the house for evening light.
Outdoor Living
An oak-framed dining pergola with a stone-topped kitchen, sited to catch the last of the western sun.
The Finished Landscape
The garden now reads as one continuous move from architecture to parkland, with no visible boundary between the two.
