A narrow walled garden behind a Victorian townhouse, designed to be read as a room rather than a strip of leftover ground.
The Brief
A calm, green outlook from a new kitchen extension — usable in the evening, low maintenance, and private from neighbouring windows.

The Design
The garden is organised across its width rather than its length: a raised planted bank, a still water trough, and a broad bench terrace that stops the eye travelling straight to the back wall.

Materials
Pale porcelain in a large single format, corten steel to the water feature and raised beds, and iroko for the bespoke seating.

Planting
Shade-tolerant layers — Dryopteris, Asplenium, Hydrangea quercifolia — beneath multi-stem Amelanchier and a single mature olive by the doors.

Outdoor Living
Fixed bench seating for eight, integrated lighting to the risers, and a low table that stays out year round.

The Finished Landscape
A small garden that feels considerably larger than its footprint, and holds interest from every window of the house.
